2012-04-02 (Radio Dabanga) - Severe shortages of drinking water in Abu Suruj camp PDF Drucken E-Mail

Source: Radio Dabanga
Date: 02.04.2012

Abu Suruj (2 Apr .) - The Abu Suruj camp for displaced people in West Darfur is facing a severe lack of drinking water because of disrupted water pumps and fuel shortages.

'There is one working water pump out of seven and not enough fuel to power this pump. 12 villages are all now relying on this one pump for water, other sources have also become contaminated,' said a witness to Radio Dabanga.

The witness warned of a humanitarian crisis if local authorities did not move quickly to solve the problem.

A large fire also reportedly broke out over the weekend and destroyed more than 30 shelters.

The witness said it destroyed the few possessions belonging to families who are now living with no shelter.

He appealed to local authorities and humanitarian organisations to provide them with assistance.
